Lumberjacks' Losing Streak Reaches Double-Digts, Fall to Outlaws for First Time This Season

BOONVILLE, NY - Sometimes reaching rock bottom is out of your control.

Other times, this state is self-inflicted.

Boonville (17-20-1) lost 9-5 to Oneonta (8-29) at Hanson Aggregates Field tonight, marking its tenth-consecutive loss and first of the season against Oneonta.

Although the Lumberjacks still committed two fielding errors, the lineups’ inability to plate runners helped secure the defeat, stranding 12 runners on base.

Two costly double plays marred the squad’s chances to gain the lead – outfielder Jorge Olivera scored one run while grounding into a double play in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, but the blunder inhibited the Lumberjacks from adding supplemental runs. The team loaded the bases yet again in the subsequent inning, but extra hitter Andy Perez chopped a ball to Outlaw shortstop Matthew Carrera, who touched second base and relayed a throw to first baseman Kole Waterman before Perez could reach the bag.

And while Boonville squandered opportunities, Oneonta capitalized, taking the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth off a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.

The Lumberjacks’ pitching staff also struggled, forfeiting 12 hits against the Outlaws – the fourth time across the past five games when the staff has allowed double-digit hits. All but one Outlaw batter got on base at least once throughout the duration of the affair.

Sebastian Rivera recorded his first start of the season, surrendering five hits, including a two-run home run to Oneonta second baseman Zachary Robinson in the top of the fourth, and four walks across his five-inning outing.

The Lumberjacks continued their downward spiral in the standings, dropping to three full games behind the Diamond Dawgs in the East Division. The squad will need to win each of its last four games while relying on the Diamond Dawgs to lose all of its remaining contests to clinch the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Boonville will face Amsterdam tomorrow night at Hanson Aggregates Field.
